Technological advancements have also made it possible to reduce the scope of maintenance work required at each interval. From discussions with dealers and customers, it becomes clear that the prescribed annual service in addition to maintenance every 10,000 km and service every 20,000 km is not always taken advantage of. This can have negative effects on the technological condition of vehicles and means that motorcycles are for instance only serviced every three years. A wide range of operating materials are then outdated.
In order to take account of the changing behaviour of customers as well as technological advancements, BMW Motorrad has developed a flexible servicing concept, which also takes into consideration the periods when machines are not being used. This means that the scope of maintenance work depends more heavily on the elapsed time than on the mileage.
A service interval display is part of the dynamic maintenance strategy. Irrespective of the mileage, one maintenance appointment per year is required for all BMW motorcycles. For those who travel a lot, there are also mileage-dependent components alongside the compulsory annual appointment. This means that additional maintenance is required when the mileage exceeds 10,000 kilometres a year. The customer is informed that the bike is due for maintenance in good time via the multifunction display.
